France kick off Euro 2016 against Romania tonight and one of their stars is backing West Ham United hero Dimitri Payet to fire them to glory.

Payet has been nothing short of sensational since his move from Marseille last summer for a bargain £10.5 million.

He scored 12 goals - including a number of sensational free-kicks which are fast becoming his trademark - provided 15 assists and was shortlisted for the prestigious PFA Player of the Year award in his debut season in English football.

That honour eventually went to Leicester City's Jamie Vardy but Payet still made the PFA team of the season.

His exquisite skill, goals and work rate have already made him a genuine Hammers hero ending a 10-year wait for a player of that ilk since Carlos Tevez pulled on the claret and blue back in 2006/7.

Payet has many similarities to Tevez but Hammers fans will be hoping he sticks around longer than the Argentine's single season in the claret and blue.

'We've got Payet'

The French star even had the football song of the season made up for him by Hammers fans who belt out 'We've got Payet' to the tune of Billy Ray Cyrus' Achy Breaky Heart.

So good was Payet he convinced Didier Deschamps he should be part of France's home European Championships.

And he has carried his club form into the international scene with a series of brilliant free-kicks and assists.

'He could take us far'

Now one of his France and former Marseille teammates Andre-Pierre Gignac has told French outlet Le Figaro the midfielder can help fire Les Bleus to glory this summer.

"His foresight in the game, his performance at set pieces, the assists and goals with direct kicks - he (Payet) brought it all," Gignac told Le Figaro.

""If he continues like this, he could take us far. Dimitri has been very efficient. I know a little more than some as I knew him for two years at Marseille when he provided me with a lot!

"When you have great technically gifted players like Antoine (Griezmann), Dimitri or Paul (Pogba) behind you, it makes it a little easier."

West Ham fans will be willing Payet to do well having been enthralled by him all season.

But they will just be hoping he stays injury free and does not attract too much attention as the transfer window vultures circle.
