Why alleged Tottenham target Vincent Janssen is more likely to be a van Nistelrooy than a Depay

Vincent Janssen scores the first goal for Netherlands

The alleged Tottenham Hotspur target can be another successful import from the Netherlands.

Netherland's Vincent Janssen celebrates.

According to a report from Sky Sports, Tottenham Hotspur are in talks with Vincent Janssen regarding a potential £12million move from AZ Alkmaar to White Hart Lane.

It is no secret that Spurs could do with additional fire-power heading into next season, with Harry Kane their only out-and-out striker as things stand, but fans would be forgiven for wondering just whose footsteps Janssen will follow in if he does arrive in England this summer.

Many players have arrived in the Premier League having previously torn up the Dutch top flight, but not all have made a success of it.

Manchester United's Memphis Depay celebrates after the match

Memphis Depay was a superstar in the Eredivisie last season, but after joining Manchester United he managed just two goals in 29 league appearances (and only seven in all competitions).

That followed a year with PSV Eindhoven during which he scored 22 goals in 30 league games and 28 in all competitions.

Then there was Dirk Kuyt – prolific for Feyenoord (101 goals in 154 games) and anything but for Liverpool; although a positional switch certainly played its part during his time in England.

While arguably the biggest flop of recent times was Afonso Alvez, who smashed in 45 goals in just 39 matches in the Eredivisie before struggling to adapt to England after a switch to Middlesbrough.

With all that in mind, Tottenham fans may worry about Janssen, but they shouldn’t, because the 21-year-old Dutchman has far more in common with Luis Suarez and Ruud van Nistelrooy (two players who enjoyed huge success both in Holland and then England).

Manchester United's Ruud van Nistelrooy and Tottenham's Robbie Keane in action

The alleged Tottenham target finished last season with 32 goals in 49 matches and he has the strength and the technical ability to excel at White Hart Lane.

While Depay was a very skilful player, dazzling mediocre defences with pace and trickery, Janssen is an all-round striker who will cope with the demands of coming up against Premier League defences week in, week out.

He has risen up the ranks in impressive style and already has three goals in just five international matches for the Netherlands.

In contrast, Alves only ever managed one international goal in just eight caps for Brazil while Depay is stuck on three in 24 appearances for the Netherlands.

Compare that with van Nistelrooy and Suarez who both matched their goal-scoring exploits for PSV Eindhoven and Ajax respectively with their efforts on the international stage.

Janssen is the same; in short he is the real deal and arriving at a club where he will not be expected to be the main man straight away – with Kane taking that role – the young forward could be another success story waiting to happen.
