Former England defender Terry Butcher has told Sky Sports he disagrees with Rio Ferdinand about John Stones starting for England.

The Everton defender endured a difficult campaign as he came in for heavy criticism for his performances in a poor season for the Blues.

He is a part of the England squad for Euro 2016 this summer, but it is unknown whether her will be a starter or feature from the bench.

Some, such as Rio Ferdinand, believe he should be a starter to prepare him for the World Cup in Russia, while others believe that would be an unwise move from Roy Hodgson.

One such person is Terry Butcher, who says he disagrees with the former Manchester United defender over Stones.

“I am looking more for John Stones for Russia, he is the future,” he told Sky Sports.

“I disagree with Rio Ferdinand's comments that Stones needs game time - there is no rush with him. Let him learn and get ready for Russia.”

The dilemma over Stones certainly does leave Roy Hodgson with a major question to answer this summer.

He is easily the best ball playing defender that they have, but the questions about his defensive abilities leave many believe that England cannot take the risk on him.

The problem is that the Three Lions may need a defender who is comfortable on the ball if they are to be successful in France, which is why Stones’ selection is such a dilemma for Hodgson.
