Manchester United are closing in on the signature of Eric Bailly, with SkySports reporting the Villarreal defender has completed and passed a medical.

The 22-year-old centre-back will become Jose Mourinho's first signing as Red Devils boss, after an impressive season in La Liga.

Interestingly, SkySports claim that United's deal to sign Bailly was sped up by rival interest from three clubs, including rivals Manchester City.

The report states that Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain also showed interest, and this pushed his price tag towards £30 million.

It is a high figure to pay for a 22-year-old, but this is the market United find themselves in, with clubs only well aware of their spending power.

Bailly is an excellent young talent who Villarreal would ideally have wanted to keep, and so it would only have taken a figure of this magnitude to conclude a deal.

One of the areas Louis van Gaal failed to strengthen last summer as manager was central defence, despite it being blindingly obvious that the Red Devils needed reinforcements, and it is no surprise that Jose Mourinho has acted quickly to bring in a player in a key position.
