Everton failed to finish in the top 10 of the Premier League this past season.

Former Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United defender Stuart Pearce suggested on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show on talkSPORT on Monday morning (broadcast from 6am, June 6) that Everton have over-sold themselves.

The former West Ham United man suggested that the Toffees finished where they did in the Premier League table this past season because they do not have the squad to compete with most of the teams above them in the standings.

Everton finished 11th in the league table during the 2015-16 campaign with 47 points from 38 matches.

“I think Everton have talked up where they are as a football club a little bit over them probably where they are, in my opinion,” said Pearce on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show on talkSPORT on Monday morning (broadcast from 6am, June 6).

“When I look at the teams that finished above them in the league, apart from maybe Leicester on paper, probably around where they are for the investment that they put in as a football club.”

Everton’s performances under Roberto Martinez this past season were underwhelming, and there can be no denial that they deserved to finish where they did.

However, with the squad of players that the Spaniard had, the Toffees should have at least been able to end up in the top eight.

The Toffees should have challenged for the top six at least, and the fans were understandably disappointed.

If Everton are able to hold on their best players and make a few good signings in the summer transfer window, then they should be able to challenge for the top six next season.
