The former Tottenham Hotspur man is a different player for his country.
It is fair to say Tottenham Hotspur fans do not have the fondest memories of former player Vlad Chiriches.
The Romanian international arrived at White Hart Lane in the summer of 2013, but in the two seasons that followed he clocked up just 43 appearances for Spurs, only 27 of which were in the Premier League.
A back injury in his debut campaign certainly did not help. However the simple fact was Chiriches looked out of his depth and a relatively swift exit to Napoli saw the vast majority of Tottenham fans breathe a sigh of relief.
His spell in Italy has not gone much better, with the 26-year-old featuring just 17 times for Napoli to date; yet this summer he has the chance to show just what he is capable of when he turns out for his country in the European Championships.
Tottenham fans may not recognise the player when he wears the colours of his country, with Romania’s back-line proving almost impenetrable during qualifying, with only two goals conceded in 10 matches.
That was the best defensive record of any team during the qualifying campaign and Romania’s group for the tournament suggests they could surprise a few in the coming weeks.
Chiriches and his teammates will come up against Albania, France and Switzerland when the competition kicks off on Friday and Tottenham fans would be forgiven for wondering at the sight of a Chiriches who looks composed and dominant when captaining his country.
Of course he could yet have a ‘mare, but if he plays anything like he did in the qualifiers, Tottenham fans are in for a shock…not that they would have him back in a hurry!
