Villarreal's Eric Bailly in action with Lyon's Nabil Fekir
According to the Daily Mail, Villarreal centre back Eric Bailly has arrived in Manchester to undergo a medical with Manchester United.
However, few could have predicted that the defender Mourinho wanted at Old Trafford would be Villarreal star Eric Bailly, who remains an unknown to many as he closes in on a move to United.
The Daily Mail report that Bailly, 22, has arrived in Manchester and will undergo a medical this afternoon, after United agreed a huge £30m fee with Villarreal for his signature.
The Ivorian international joined Espanyol as a teenager, and after just five first-team appearances, the centre back left for Villarreal in January 2015 as a replacement for Arsenal's Gabriel Paulista.
Bailly played a key role for Villarreal as they reached the semi-finals of the Europa League, and his absence was notable as they collapsed to a 3-0 second leg defeat to Liverpool at Anfield.
With great pace and power, Bailly is in a similar mould to two defenders who worked under Mourinho at Real Madrid and Chelsea respectively - Raphael Varane and Kurt Zouma.
Mourinho will be hoping that Bailly can reach that kind of level at Old Trafford, and with his first signing all but wrapped up, the new United boss will be looking for more additions in the coming weeks.
Do you think Bailly will be a good signing for United?
