The Algerian could be set to join Jamie Vardy at the Emirates in a sensational double swoop.
The news comes as something of a surprise given that the Gunners are thought to be close to finalising a deal for fellow Fox Jamie Vardy, but it would signal a stark contrast in approach from manager Arsene Wenger.
Recent transfer windows have left Arsenal fans frustrated at the lack of activity from their club – most notably last summer, where Petr Cech was the sole arrival – but a new strategy now appears to be in place.
The Gunners have already secured the arrival of talented Swiss midfielder Granit Xhaka and an announcement of Vardy’s arrival appears to be imminent. Adding Mahrez to that list would certainly be a statement of intent and would spell trouble for the likes of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Theo Walcott.
Mahrez enjoyed a fantastic season last term, with his 17 goals and 11 assists helping lead Leicester to an incredible Premier League triumph. If the reports prove accurate it would appear Wenger is hoping some of that title-winning magic will rub off on his team with the arrival of the Foxes’ two biggest stars.
Twitter was predictably awash with excitement over the rumour and we have provided a selection below:
Mahrez and Vardy.....Christmas couldn't have come sooner!— ANGEL (@Sir_Opara) June 6, 2016
Reports now of Mahrez joining AFC too. Bet Soton are breathing a sigh of relief now we have a new team to savage every year.— Goonerinho (@ArsenalRT) June 5, 2016
Looking back at some of the goals Mahrez scored last season. What a player. Closest thing I've seen to Robben.— Toby Irish (@TobyIrish1) June 5, 2016
Imagine what's holding up Vardy deal is the fact that Arsenal want to make it a double swoop and include Mahrez. Arsenal twitter would melt.— .... (@YonkoAbbz) June 5, 2016
Put Mkhitaryan and Mahrez in a steel cage with a money in the bank briefcase hanging high above and sign the one that escapes alive.— Doug Nichols (@TheTXI) June 5, 2016
Vardy seems a done deal and also in talks with Mahrez. Now, I doubt we'll sign both but if we do, bye bye Theo and maybe Ox. Buzzing. #afc— Matthew (@MatthewKing10) June 5, 2016
Vardy has a simple decision to make. He can either continue playing with Kante and Mahrez, or he can stay at Leicester.— Paddy (@VieiraPaddy) June 5, 2016
