Ashley Fletcher is looking first and foremost at staying at Manchester United.

Promising striker Ashley Fletcher was linked by The Sun at the weekend with a loan switch to Leeds United.

Sunday's edition (page 65) reported the Whites are keen on signing the attacker, who impressed during a spell at Barnsley last season, helping them win promotion from League One.

Fletcher may have to consider a loan move for the sake of his progression, but his first priority it seems is making an impression at Manchester United, after seeing pal Marcus Rashford make an impact.

Quoted by The Mirror last week, he said he holds out hope of impressing new manager Jose Mourinho.

He said: "Hopefully people might think of us together as young players at United, but what Marcus has done is unbelievable. Scoring for United’s first team, scoring for England…

“He deserves every bit of the attention he is getting – but maybe I can run him for his place next season at United if I am back there.

"I hope if Jose [Mourinho] was watching the play-off final it might have given him something to smile about.

“I’d like to think that some of us youngsters might do a job for him but Manchester United is a huge club and have to spend big money to compete for the Premier League title."

Breaking into Jose Mourinho's team will be far from easy, amid reports the Red Devils are closing in on a deal for Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

SkySports report this is likely to be a one-year deal, and the best option for Fletcher during this time may be to seek a loan move, to strengthen this case for a first team spot.

Jose Mourinho is already a manager without a track record of bringing through young talent, and Fletcher expecting both he and Rashford to get a chance next season may be asking too much.

What his comments do indicate, is that he could be unwilling to agree a loan move early, meaning Leeds and Barnsley could both be kept waiting.

If Fletcher is pinning his hopes on still being at United next season then he is likely to want to wait until pre-season to state his case to Jose Mourinho, and try and convince him to keep him around.

The Yorkshire Evening Post report that Fletcher has been offered a new contract by Manchester United, although is yet to put pen to paper on a deal.
