Tottenham Hotspur would be wise to make a move for the Leicester City star.
The problem for Tottenham Hotspur is that manager Mauricio Pochettino has such an impressive core group of players that it will almost always take substantial transfer fees to bring in better players.
But when it comes to the centre of the park, where Spurs currently rely on the ever-improving Eric Dier to protect the back-line, there is a player who is available for what, in today’s game, will be seen as something of a bargain.
According to the Daily Mail among others, Leicester City midfielder N’Golo Kante has a release clause of £20million, and while that is considerably more than the Foxes paid for him, he is worth every penny.
At 25, Kante has not yet reached the peak of his career, and when you consider how important he was to Leicester’s title triumph it is scary to think what the future may hold for the French international.
While Dier is a great player, Kante is a step up and although Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez took the headlines last season, the Frenchman was vital for the miracle that followed Claudio Ranieri’s arrival at the King Power Stadium.
The problem with release clauses is that English teams do not appear to have got the hang of them yet.
Clubs in Portugal and Spain often slap ridiculous figures on their players’ heads when a new contract is signed: £60million here and £80million there.
But in valuing Kante at just £20million Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy knows exactly what he has to pay, and while the player himself may not want to swap Leicester for North London it is well worth Spurs chancing their arm.
Kante would be superb for Tottenham, and if they can also bring in another winger and a quality striker they would have everything at their disposal not only to push harder for the league but also make real waves in Europe.
