Leeds United were this weekend linked with a surprise move to sign a player from their traditional rivals Manchester United.

Ashley Fletcher, 20, has been on loan at Barnsley this past season, and Sunday's edition of The Sun (page 65) claimed club owner Massimo Cellino is interested in doing a deal to bring him to Leeds.

This would be a loan move, with Fletcher hoping he can still make it at Old Trafford, and emulate pal Marcus Rashford.

Fletcher scored in the League One play-off final and Leeds ultimately would be hoping he could help their bid to win promotion next season into the Premier League.

Despite being owned by Manchester United, Ashley Fletcher's bright talent makes him a player than Leeds cannot afford to be suddenly be selective about, if he decides to would like to move to Elland Road.

Fans would still expect investment to be made on permanent signings, but getting Fletcher in through the door would be a good early step if Leeds can pull it off.

The Whites need to spend to give new boss Garry Monk a chance to compete with recently relegated sides Aston Villa and Newcastle United, who have heavy financial support aided by Premier League parachute payments.
