Rangers are reportedly pushing to sign former Newcastle United defender Steven Taylor.
Former Newcastle United defender Steven Taylor
According to The Scottish Sun, released Newcastle defender Steven Taylor has been in contact with Joey Barton about a move to Rangers.
The Gers have been active in the transfer market already this summer, landing Liverpool teenager Jordan Rossiter and Burnley's Joey Barton to strengthen the midfield, whilst Accrington Stanley duo Matt Crooks and Josh Windass will also arrive having signed pre-contract agreements in January.
With midfield now sorted, manager Mark Warburton must look to other areas of his team, and central defence is an area fans would like to see strengthened.
Rob Kiernan and Danny Wilson had their ups and downs this past season, and with no cover behind them and a step up in quality in the Scottish Premiership, Warburton needs an experienced defender to lead his back line.
Now, The Scottish Sun report that Rangers are weighing up a move for Steven Taylor, following his release from Newcastle United on Friday.
Taylor, 30, made over 250 appearances for Newcastle during a lengthy spell on Tyneside, but the injury-prone centre back is now on the lookout for a new club this summer.
It's reported that Taylor has been in contact with his former Newcastle team-mate Joey Barton about a possible reunion at Ibrox this summer, after the midfielder joined Warburton's men last week.
Taylor would bring experience and leadership to the Rangers defence, and whilst that's just what they need right now, his injury history and considerable wages may put Rangers off - but having contacted Barton, it appears that Rangers are at least considering a swoop for the former England Under-21 ace.
