Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton has told The Glasgow Evening Times that Rangers fans should be realistic about next season.

Rangers won the Scottish Championship title this past season and will feature in the Scottish Premiership during the 2016-17 campaign.

Many fans of the Glasgow giants will expect Mark Warburton’s side to compete with Old Firm rivals Celtic for the Scottish Premiership title next season.

Sutton has suggested that Rangers supporters should be realistic about their chances of winning the league title next season.

The Englishman has also praised the Gers for signing former Newcastle United midfielder Joey Barton. The Englishman has joined Rangers on a free transfer after leaving Premier League-bound Burnley.

“I still think Rangers supporters need to be a little bit patient,” Sutton told The Glasgow Evening Times. “As much as they want to make big steps there has to be an element of realism.”

“I like the fact they’ve signed Joey Barton,” added Sutton. “I know there’s been different things said about Joey Barton, but it only makes Scottish football more exciting and Rangers will want to go to Motherwell and make a statement, show that they’re going to push not only in the cups but in the league this season.”

Rangers do have a good squad, and it will become stronger with a few good signings in the summer transfer window.

The Gers will still not be as strong as Celtic, who will start the 2016-17 campaign as favourites for the Scottish Premiership title.
