Speaking to talkSPORT, former Aston Villa striker Andy Gray has hailed the appointment of Roberto di Matteo at the club.

The former Chelsea manager was confirmed as the new Aston Villa manager on Friday, becoming Tony Xia’s first managerial appointment at the club.

His arrival has been warmly welcomed by the Villa faithful who believe he is a smart appointment given the success he has enjoyed with West Bromwich Albion in the Championship previously.

Another former West Brom manager Steve Clarke, who will act as his assistant at Villa Park, joins him at the club.

And Gray has hailed their appointments, saying the club’s fans can be excited again after a dismal few years.

“I think this is the first time in three years they [Aston Villa fans] can be excited,” he told talkSPORT.

“I think the appointment is an excellent one. He knows the league, he had success there with West Brom and with Steve Clarke they’re a wonderful team.”

Di Matteo’s appointment at Aston Villa certainly sets up the Championship to be an interesting division next year.

He is the second former Champions League winner to take charge of a club in the division after Rafa Benitez decided to stay at Newcastle United.

They will both be hoping to vie for the title, and with Garry Monk at Leeds United and Nigel Pearson at Derby County, as well as Norwich City, the Championship looks set to be extremely exciting next season.
