The 46-year-old joins the Villans as they get set to play in the Championship next season following their relegation from the Premier League this past season.

His appointment has largely been met with optimism from the club’s fan base, despite his ties to Midlands rivals West Bromwich Albion.

And speaking to the club’s official website, he has described the job as a huge honour for him.

"It's a wonderful honour for me to become manager of this great football club and I'm looking forward to the challenge of taking Aston Villa back to its rightful place,” he told avfc.co.uk.

Aston Villa fans will now be hoping that Di Matteo can enjoy similar success to that he enjoyed with West Brom in the Championship.

He led them back to the Premier League at the first attempt back in 2009/10 season, as they finished second behind Newcastle United in the league.

That shows he knows how to work in the second flight, and Villa will be hoping they can return at the first time of asking also.
