According to the Daily Mail, Newcastle United are eyeing a move for Real Madrid’s Alvaro Arbeloa.
The report claims that Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez is in the market for a new right-back and Arbeloa seemingly fits the profile as his contract in Madrid is to expire at the end of this month.
Seeing the Spaniard in charge of a Championship club only months after managing Real Madrid seems somewhat surreal, but the Toon Army have ambitions of an immediate return to the top-flight.
The club will look to hold on to their better players, but one area which needs immediate attention is the right-back slot as the report claims tat Daryl Janmaat is likely to leave the club this summer.
Arbeloa has emerged as a shock contender, although his history of playing under Benitez at both Liverpool and Madrid does mean that a potential deal isn’t as far-fetched as it may seem.
The 33-year-old will be looking for a new club next month, and there won’t be as many exciting challenges out there as the chance to help Newcastle regain their place in the Premier League at the first attempt.
Arbeloa, despite barely featuring for Madrid over the past 12 months, still boasts plenty of quality and experience and there is no doubt he could do the job asked of him on Tyneside.
