Leeds United have appointed Garry Monk as their new head coach, picking the former Swansea boss as the man to take over from Steve Evans, confirming the news via their official website on Thursday.

The club did have a back-up plan in place, with The Times reporting that Leeds did indeed hold talks with former Blackburn Rovers boss Steve Kean.

The Times report that club owner Massimo Cellino was impressed with Kean after holding talks with the Scot, although not enough to make the Italian elevate him as first choice over Monk.

Kean has been working in Brunei, leading club side Brunei DMM to win the league title in Singapore.

His reputation in England is based on a poor spell at Blackburn Rovers where he was thrown in at the deep end and could not avert their relegation from the Premier League, but it is claimed that he is hoping to land a job back in the UK.

Monk has only a 12 month contract, while Cellino's impatience with bosses is well known, so after impressing Cellino in interviews, Kean could well become a candidate in the future.
