According to Portuguese publication Record, as reported by TEAMtalk.com, Sporting are interested in signing the Serbia international striker as a possible replacement for Islam Slimani, who is expected to leave the Lisbon giants.
Mitrovic has made it clear that he is happy at Newcastle, but the 21-year-old has conceded that being linked with Sporting feels good.
The former Anderlecht youngster has also revealed that if an official approach is made, then the interested club will have to first talk to the Magpies, who got relegated from the Premier League at the end of the 2015-16 campaign and will play in the Championship next season.
“I have four more years of [my] contract with Newcastle and I haven’t received any official approach so far,” TEAMtalk.com quotes Mitrovic as saying.
“I’m happy in England, of course, but it’s always good to see my name linked to a club like Sporting – it’s a big club.
“If something comes up they will always have to talk with Newcastle first, and only then with me and with my representative.”
Mitrovic scored nine goals and created 30 chances in 34 Premier League appearances for Newcastle this past season.
The Serbia international striker had a pass accuracy of 72% and a shot accuracy of 49%, and won 78 headers, 16 dribbles and 15 tackles.
