Speaking on talkSPORT, Jason Cundy says that John Stones stagnated at Everton this past season.

Everton endured a highly disappointing campaign, finishing 11th in the table, a position that ultimately cost Roberto Martinez his job.

One player who can in for stern criticism was youngster John Stones, with many condemning him for perceived defensive mistakes across the season.

Stones is now with the England squad preparing for Euro 2016, with questions remaining over the role he will play in Roy Hodgson’s side.

He has started two of their pre-tournament friendlies, but was dropped for the 1-0 win over Portugal on Thursday.

And Cundy believes he should remain on the bench in France, as he is not quite ready to be a starter in international football.

“I don’t think Stones is quite ready, he’s had a season where he’s stagnated,” he told talkSPORT.

“I’m a big fan of Stones though, if he had had a good season he would have been an absolute shoe in for England.”

There is no denying that Stones endured a very frustrating season with Everton, but that should not stop him being an England regular this summer.

Of the three centre backs in the squad, he is easily the best of the bunch and crucially is the most comfortable of the trio at coming out of defence with the ball.

Having that type of player in the side could be crucial to England’s hopes, and it will be interesting to see if Roy Hodgson shares that view.
