The former Liverpool striker also believes that manager Jurgen Klopp needs to bring in a centre-forward in the mould of Luis Suarez, who is now at Spanish and European giants Barcelona.
“I think they need to strengthen throughout the spine, I think they definitely need one or two defenders,” Heskey told Squawka.
“Attacking midfield wise their kind of sorted. Striker-wise, unless you can get Suarez back it’s tricky – it’s been a bit difficult for them since he left.”
Liverpool do need to sign a striker and at least one central defender in order to challenge for a top-four finish in the Premier League next season.
The problem is that without Champions League football, the Merseyside outfit may not be able to attract the top players.
Moreover, there is also the doubt whether the Reds would be able to pay the transfer fees that clubs like Chelsea and Manchester City could.
Liverpool manager Klopp will probably have to bring in ‘second-tier’ but promising players and then improve them.
The Reds would not be able to challenge for the Premier League title next season, but they should try to build a squad capable of finishing in the Champions League places.
