Speaking to talkSPORT, former Aston Villa manager Alex McLeish says new Villans boss Roberto di Matteo will need to bring in quality this summer.

The former Chelsea manager was confirmed as the new Aston Villa manager on Friday afternoon, becoming Tony Xia’s first managerial appointment since buying the club.

He takes charge with the club set to embark on a Championship campaign following their disastrous relegation from the Premier League.

Many believe that a complete overhaul of the playing squad is needed this summer as the current group is lacking in quality.

McLeish agrees with that, saying that Di Matteo needs to add quality and a Danny Drinkwater type player to control the midfield.

“I think what Roberto has to do is get some quality, definitely through the spine of the team,” he told talkSPORT.

“Without doubt he has to get a goalscorer. They need to get the backbone of the team sorted with the centre backs and a midfielder who can control the game, somebody like Danny Drinkwater.”

Chief among Di Matteo’s plans will surely be improving his forward line this summer, as McLeish suggested.

The highest goalscorer in the side was Jordan Ayew last season as he managed just seven goals in all competitions.

Indeed, they managed to score just 27 goals in total, further demonstrating that that area of the team needs serious improvement if they are to compete in the Championship next year.
