Former Celtic defender Alan Stubbs has told talkSPORT that Brendan Rodgers is a fantastic appointment for Celtic.

The former Liverpool manager was confirmed as the new Celtic manager last month, replacing Ronny Deila at the helm.

His appointment has been heralded as something of a coup by the Scottish champions, who are thought to have fought off interest from the Premier League for his services.

Indeed, there was even some surprise that Rodgers has decided to swap the English top flight for Scotland. Stubbs was left by the capture, saying it is a fantastic appointment for the club.

“When you think of the ambition and the size of a club like Celtic, then it wasn’t a surprise,” he told talkSPORT.

“I think the semi final defeat by Rangers has got the board’s attention to think ‘we need a big name’. It’s a fantastic appointment. It wouldn’t surprise me to see season tickets sold out.”

It will now be interesting to see what kind of work Rodgers elects to do in the transfer window this summer.

Many have criticised this Celtic squad for not being good enough, believing that a number of signings are needed if they are to at least get back into the Champions League.

Rodgers will be more than aware of that, and it will be fascinating to see the changes he looks to make to the current playing squad.
