Sunderland are eyeing a move for Athletic Bilbao midfielder Ibai Gomez, according to Basque newspaper Deia.

Sunderland are expected to be busy in this transfer window as Sam Allardyce looks to revamp the squad and avoid another relegation battle next season.

Allardyce is likely drawing up a long list of potential targets and it appears that one the players he may be targeting is the Athletic Bilbao midfielder Ibai Gomez.

The midfielder endured a difficult campaign this past season, with a series of injuries limiting him to just nine appearances in total.

His contract is set to expire next summer and an extension is unlikely to be offered, meaning the club and player are keen to secure a move this summer according to Deia.

He reportedly has a €35million release clause in his current deal, but it would not cost anywhere near that to secure his services.

Instead, he could be available for €3million, around £2.3million, and the Black Cats have already made contact about a potential move and are set to continue negotiations for the 26-year-old over the coming weeks.
