According to BBC Sport, Aston Villa will not only appoint Roberto Di Matteo as their new manager, but Steve Clarke will be brought in as his assistant.

Villa chose to part ways with manager Remi Garde back in March after less than five months in the job, and finding a new manager has been top of the priority list since the end of the Premier League season.

Now relegated to the Championship, Villa will be looking to return to the top flight at the first time of asking, and they've gone for a manager with experience of winning promotion to the Premier League.

BBC Sport claim that Italian boss Roberto Di Matteo will be named Villa manager later today, and his assistant has already been lined up for a move to Villa Park.

The report claims that Di Matteo will bring in Steve Clarke as his right-hand man at Villa, having played alongside the Scot during their time together at Chelsea.

The Scot - who also managed West Brom, much like Di Matteo did - has been out of work since losing his job at Reading in December, and will be heading back into football as Di Matteo's assistant.

The 52-year-old is set to reunite with Di Matteo, and it's suggested that he will 'take hands-on responsibility for Villa's group of underachieving players', whilst his contacts in the game are also believed to be a huge factor.

Landing a veteran coach who worked with top clubs like Chelsea, West Ham and Liverpool whilst also having managerial experience of his own is a huge addition for Di Matteo, and despite their links to rivals West Brom, they could be a dream duo for Villa.
