Former Rangers defender John Brown has claimed Celtic are running scared of the Gers and that is why they have appointed new manager Brendan Rodgers, replacing two-time league winner Ronny Deila.

Rangers clinched promotion to the Scottish Premiership this season after their 2012 demotion, and beat Celtic on penalties in the Scottish Cup semi-final, before losing the final to Hibernian.

Brown is adamant Celtic's run of league titles will soon come to an end.

He is quoted by Herald Scotland: "I think that Celtic have brought in Brendan Rodgers because they see a real threat in Rangers.

"Celtic fans are looking to make it 10 in a row, which I don't think they will achieve. Rangers have been out of the league for a while and it's been pretty easy for Celtic. Now they have brought in Rodgers to keep the momentum going."

Brown played at Ibrox between 1988 and 1997, winning nine league titles, three Scottish Cups, and five League Cups.

The 54-year-old has had two forays into management himself, with Clyde, and then Dundee, who he departed in 2014 despite winning 46 per cent of his matches in charge over a 12 month period.

While Rangers have big ambitions this season, Celtic are the club in the driving seat in Scotland, and their decision to push Deila into resignation was presented more publicly as due to his failure in Europe, rather than worrying about Rangers re-entering the top flight.

Brown's prompted plenty of discussion among Celtic fans, who took to Twitter to hit back at his claims. Here is a look at a selection of the responses...
