Newcastle United and Aston Villa are currently amongst the favourites to be promoted from the Championship.
Shay Given has told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show, which was broadcast on TalkSPORT on 1st June, that Aston Villa and Newcastle United are both likely to find it difficult to be promoted from the Championship next season.
Villa and Newcastle have endured disastrous campaigns, and they are set to drop into the second tier next term.
The Claret and Blues won just three Premier League matches all season, while the Magpies just could not make it out of the bottom three.
Villa and Newcastle are currently amongst the favourites to be promoted next season, but Given feels that the pair could find life tough in the Championship.
“It’s not easy. It’s very difficult in the Championship,” Given said.
“The good news for Newcastle is that they have Benitez tied down to a new contract. That will stand them in good stead.
“With Villa I’m not sure what’s happening there yet. The sooner they can get a manager in place the better.
“But they are two massive clubs, and I would love to see them back in the Premier League. That’s easier said than done.”
Given represented both Villa and Newcastle earlier on in his career, so it is no surprise that he wants to see them both promoted.
Given played for Newcastle between 1997 and 2009, while the Republic of Ireland international was at Villa between 2011 and 2015.
Newcastle have already begun to make plans for next season, with Rafael Benitez committing his future to the North East club.
Villa, meanwhile, are still searching for a new manager - with Roberto Di Matteo the current favourite to land the job.
