The Italian has been out of work since being sacked by German side Schalke, but can boast of more glorious career moments in management.

He has won the Champions League with Chelsea, and more apt for Villa, managed to get West Bromwich Albion promoted from the Championship.

Villa have recently been taken over by Chinese investor Tony Xia, and will want Di Matteo's appointment over the line as quickly as possible.

They will be expected to be pushing for promotion back to the Premier League next season at the first time of asking.

There is a lot of work to be done with regard to clearing out players and signing new faces, and the quicker Di Matteo can put his plan into action and being meeting players and staff, the better.
