Peterborough United are leading the race to sign Mansfield Town defender Ryan Tafazolli, HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club.

Tafazolli is out of contract at Mansfield this summer and he has so far failed to accept the club's offer of a new deal at the One Call Stadium.

The news has alerted a number of club's to Tafazolli's availability on a free transfer and Mansfield are resigned to seeing the central defender move on.

Tafazolli has made over 100 league appearances for Mansfield since joining the club in 2012 after being released by Southampton.

The 24-year-old has established himself as one of the best young defenders in the lower leagues during his four years at Mansfield.

Tafazolli is understood to be keen to try his luck playing at a higher level and Peterborough are ready to offer him the chance to move up to League One.
