According to the Daily Record, Birmingham City’s Denny Johnstone is wanted by Scottish trio Dundee United, Hibernian and Kilmarnock following an excellent campaign on loan at Morton.
The report claims that the future of the forward, who has only one year left on his Birmingham deal, is unknown as Blues boss Gary Rowett make sanction a transfer away from the club.
Johnstone spent the past season on loan at Morton, scoring an impressive 17 goals for Jim Duffy’s side.
The 21-year-old began his career at Celtic, but after struggling to make inroads at Parkhead the talented forward moves south of the border and joined Birmingham’s academy.
The Blues have endured tough times in recent years, yet the arrival of boss Gary Rowett from Burton Albion has put in motion an upward curve and now the club looks in much better shape.
Johnstone has plenty of potential, though question marks remain as to whether he can make an impact at Championship level with a broad difference in quality to the Scottish lower leagues.
The report claims Hibs, Dundee United and Kilmarnock are all keen on his services, and the trio may be able to get him on the cheap if Rowett considers him surplus to requirements at St. Andrew’s.
With just one year remaining on his contract, Birmingham will have to make a decision as allowing him to run out his contract at the club as a fringe player would ultimately make little sense.
