According to Sky Sports, West Ham United are leading the race to sign Lyon defender Samuel Umtiti - despite him having interest from Barcelona.

The Hammers have already tied up one summer signing, as Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Havard Nordtveit has agreed a pre-contract agreement with the club, and will join later this summer.

Now, the attention is turning towards landing a new striker, but they could also strengthen their defence as well, despite already having the likes of Winston Reid, Angelo Ogbonna and James Collins in the ranks.

Sky Sports report that the Hammers are keen on Lyon ace Samuel Umtiti, and are even leading the race for his signature ahead of teams like Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Tottenham.

Umtiti, 22, was born in Cameroon but will be playing for France at this summer's European Championships, following injuries to Raphael Varane and Jeremy Mathieu.

The 5ft 11in centre back has impressed for Lyon, racking up more than 150 appearances for the club, and has been dependable whether playing at left back or centre back.

Now being targeted by a host of clubs - including the Champions League trio of Barcelona, PSG and Spurs - Umtiti could have his pick of a number of teams this summer, but it's West Ham who are believed to be leading the race in what would be a huge coup.
