Former Arsenal defender Sol Campbell has told Sky Sports that it would take something drastic for England to start Everton youngster John Stones this summer.

The Everton centre back is currently part of the England squad, and is likely to travel in the 23-man party that heads to France.

However, it is as yet unknown whether he will be a starter at the tournament as Roy Hodgson has so far failed to settle upon his centre back pairing.

Stones has started the friendly wins over Turkey and Australia and impressed, but there are still doubts around him given the disappointing campaign he endured at Goodison Park.

One of those who has not been impressed in Campbell, who says it would take something drastic for Stones to be a regular at Euro 2016.

"I personally would go for Smalling and Cahill. I would go for the experience of those two guys," he told Sky Sports.

"For me, something drastic would have to happen for Stones to start. You start with your most solid back four and go from there."

It will certainly be interesting to see what combination Hodgson goes with at Euro 2016 given the options available to him.

Stones is by far the more talented of the central defenders at his disposal, with his ability to bring the ball out from the back a major plus point.

However, his disappointing year cannot be overlooked, and whether Hodgson decides to take a risk on him will be one of the major answers he must answer.
