Francesco Marroccu's Ascoli future is in doubt just weeks after insisting it was healthy.
Leeds United Chairman Massimo Cellino
Ascoli sporting director Francesco Marroccu is close to leaving his role at the club, with interest from Leeds United cited.
Tuttomercatoweb claim Marroccu's time at the Serie B side is 'close to a goodbye', describing the club currently as in chaos, with all parties offering different opinions of ways to lead the club forward, even claiming Ascoli are already searching for a new sporting director.
It is reported that interest made clear by Leeds owner Massimo Cellino in bringing him to the club could provide him with his next move.
Leeds United have not had a sporting director for the past 12 months, failing to replace Nicola Salerno.
The developments come despite Marroccu telling Tuttomercatoweb a fortnight ago he was happy at the club and had not discussed a Leeds move with Cellino, who he worked with at Cagliari.
He said: "I have a contract and the relationship between me and the President Francesco Bellini means that I should stay beyond the contract. As for Leeds, with Cellino he was the person who made my entry into the world of football possible, but we have not talked about a future together again."
If their latest reports are accurate then the situation has progressed from all angles, and Cellino could be offering Marroccu a way out.
Leeds United owner Massimo Cellino watches from the stands
Another Italian sporting director may well mean more signings from Italy similar to Salerno's time at Leeds.
Likewise it could mean Leeds are looking to bring in an Italian coach to work with Marroccu, and this one is potentially a development to keep an eye on.
