Rio Ferdinand has explained to the Mirror that he would pick Everton defender John Stones for England at Euro 2016 as the Three Lions should be planning for the future.

England are currently warming up for the tournament in France this summer with several selection questions remaining about the side.

Everton defender Stones has started both of their recent friendly wins over Turkey and Australia and largely impressed.

Despite that, there are still questions about whether he should be in the starting line up after a campaign that saw him coming in for criticism for his performances.

Ferdinand though, says there should be no question about his inclusion and he should be in so England can plan for future tournaments.

“I’d be starting him to get experience for the next tournament. I’m not going into this one expecting to win it. I’m expecting progress,” he told the Mirror.

It will certainly be interesting to see which central defensive partnership that Roy Hodgson elects to go with this summer.

Stones did have a disappointing season overall for Everton, but there is no denying that he is a top quality defender on his day.

Of the current group, he is also the only one who is confident with the ball at his feet, especially bringing it out of defence, and that factor could be crucial to his hopes of being a starter.
