Olivier Bernard has suggested to The Scottish Sun that Rangers are a bigger club than Newcastle United.
The former French defender played for both Newcastle and Rangers. The 36-year-old, who started his career at French club Lyon and also played for Southampton, spent more time of his playing career at St. James’ Park than at Ibrox, but he has suggested that the Gers are the bigger club.
Bernard made the suggestion while discussing Joey Barton’s move to Rangers on a free transfer.
The English midfielder has joined the Scottish giants after leaving Premier League-bound Burnley.
Barton has also played for Newcastle, who got relegated from the Premier League at the end of the 2015-16 campaign and will feature in the Championship next season.
“Rangers will probably be the biggest club he has ever played for and he will want to make sure he wins titles and trophies so he leaves a bit of a legacy,” Bernard told The Scottish Sun.
“One of the things that will really excite Joey is the chance to try to knock Celtic off their perch, win the title and get into the Champions League.”
Rangers won the Scottish Championship title with ease this past season and will feature in the Scottish Premiership during the 2016-17 campaign.
Newcastle are one of the biggest clubs of England, but they will find it hard to finish in the top six of the Championship next season and book a place in the playoffs.
