In April Aston Villa’s former midfield maestro Stiliyan Petrov announced that he was hoping to return to the game.

He was quoted by the Daily Mail as suggesting he would relish the chance to return to Aston Villa and help them in their fight from the Championship.

Petrov of course retired from the game in 2013 after battling leukaemia and that seemed like his career was at an end.

But the former Villa and Celtic midfielder has managed to beat the disease and he is hoping to return to full fitness and find himself back in professional football – even training with the Aston Villa under-21 side.

Now he has posted an update on his fitness on Twitter:

Petrov understandably was out of shape after his battles with the disease but he looks much healthier now and nearly back to his best.

He may turn 37-years-old in July but his hunger and desire could shave the years off if Villa, or any club, were to give him a chance next season.

It would be a tremendous achievement if he did make his return to the game.
