Former player Phil Neville has urged new Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho to sign Everton defender John Stones this summer, the Liverpool Echo reports.

United have opted to name Mourinho as Louis van Gaal’s successor this past week and the rumour mill has already started to go into overdrive in regards to potential summer signings.

A recent report in the Mirror claims the Portuguese boss has a whopping £200 million transfer budget to work with this summer as the club seeks to once again challenge at the top of the Premier League table.

There are a number of areas in the United squad which needs strengthening, and one of those is at centre-back as Neville urges United to buy his former Everton team-mate John Stones.

“Stones? He'd cost a lot but forget the cost. I was at Everton when he signed from Barnsley sand straight away I thought, 'He's a Man United player'. He's English, he's young, he's got the confidence, the character and the ability,” Neville told the Liverpool Echo.

“The problem with Daley Blind and Chris Smalling is you need someone else and I think John Stones could be that other person. Jose will spend money and we will bring in players. I'd like to see an English player come in. I think that's important."

Stones, 22, has made a huge impact on Merseyside since joining the Toffees from Barnsley.

He has consolidated himself in the Everton team, shown an abundance of ability on the ball and earned international recognition with England as he looks set to be a first-team starter at Euro 2016.

The centre-back has come in for criticism of his defending and decision-making at times, yet he has so much potential and plenty of Premier League experience despite his young age.
