While they celebrated, it was obviously a disappointing afternoon for the Owls in what has been a fantastic season for them.
And Mellor was keen to focus on how well they have done this past season, and what looks to be a bright future, in his reaction on Twitter.
Well done Hull promoted back to Premier League. A great season for Sheff Weds, just sad to see it end this way. Better times ahead for club— Neil Mellor (@NeilMellor33) May 28, 2016
Sheffield Wednesday fans before the game
There is no denying that this past season has been a fantastic one for Sheffield Wednesday, who were very much the surprise package in the Championship.
They will naturally be disappointed by the result at Wembley, but they will also know that it does not mean the end of their Premier League dreams.
Middlesbrough are a testament to that, having suffered play-off final heartbreak last season but securing their return this year and they would do well to take a leaf out of Boro’s book.
