Barton has joined Scottish giants Rangers on a free transfer after leaving Premier League-bound Burnley.
The 33-year-old former Newcastle United and Manchester City midfielder is a high-profile signing for the Scottish Premiership-bound outfit.
Former Rangers midfielder Ferguson has revealed that he has been left surprised by his old club’s ability to attract Barton.
The former Scotland international has admitted that he expected the Glasgow giants to sign players from the lower leagues in England.
“I’ve already made it clear what I think about the capture of Barton,” Ferguson wrote in The Daily Record. “This guy is a class act who will prove to be a massive signing for Rangers. In my mind, he’s exactly what the club needs.
“I’ll be honest, I’m surprised by it too because I expected them to be shopping around in the lower leagues of English football looking for a few rough diamonds the way they did last summer. But Barton is the finished article. A polished professional at the top of his game.”
Barton’s arrival at Ibrox has been welcomed by the Rangers fans, and the midfielder should be a success in the Scottish Premiership.
Rangers will be aiming to compete with Old Firm rivals Celtic for the league title, and the former Queens Park Rangers midfielder will be a key player in that quest.
The Gers, though, need to be realistic about their chances of winning the championship next season. Celtic will start the season as favourites and will have the strongest squad in Scotland.
