Di Matteo is believed to be edging closer to taking the job at Villa Park, after holding discussions with the Midland club’s hierarchy.
The Italian job has reportedly impressed the Villa board in interviews, and he has beaten off competition from other prospective managers.
Villa believe that the former Chelsea boss is the man to guide them forward, as they look for a quick escape from the Championship.
Di Matteo is apparently beginning to make plans ahead of his potential move to Villa, and he wants to bring Newton to the club.
Newton was Di Matteo’s assistant manager at Chelsea, when the Blues won the Champions League.
Newton is currently still working as assistant manager at Chelsea, but he could be persuaded to reunite with Di Matteo.
With Di Matteo next in line to take the Villa job, his main rival Nigel Pearson appears to have looked elsewhere for employment.
Pearson has been interviewed by Derby County recently, and is now odds-on to take the job at the iPro Stadium.
