Why there is a Real Madrid star Rafa Benitez might be able to sign for Newcastle.

Many managers look to their former clubs to make signings, and Rafa Benitez has shown this himself in the past.

He did so at Liverpool by signing Mauricio Pellegrino and Momo Sissoko from Valencia, while at Napoli he snapped up Pepe Reina from the Reds.

Now confirmed as permanent boss at Newcastle United, he faces a challenge to try and persuade any players to join him in the Championship, especially from his previous club, Champions League finalists Real Madrid.

Yet there is one player who he may be able to tempt due to his long standing working relationship with him, and current contractual situation, Alvaro Arbeloa.

Arbeloa, 33, is out of contract this summer and looks set to leave after a long association with Real, having fallen out of favour under Zinedine Zidane.

He has played under Rafa Benitez twice in his career, with the boss signing him for Liverpool in 2007.

Arbeloa was part of Benitez's best Liverpool side, which came close to winning the Premier League title in 2008/09.

The right-back made more than 60 appearances in England's top flight, and would have a good chance of re-adapting back to life in England if Newcastle snapped him up.

Arbeloa would not be a long-term replacement for Daryl Janmaat or even the only right-back Newcastle need next season with youth needed in defence as well.

His leadership skills and ability to communicate Benitez's instructions could be vital in the dressing room, if the manager can convince him to sign.

There would not be a single manager in the Championship who could persuade Arbeloa to swap Real Madrid for the division, and even this may be too much for the Newcastle boss, but if one man stands chance of doing so then he can, and if there is one Real Madrid player who is an attainable addition.
