Benitez met Ashley after Newcastle’s 5-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at St. James’ Park in the Premier League earlier this month, and he is happy with the relationship he has with his boss.
“You know, I met him that day, but after that I was still dealing with Lee and my relationship with him is very good,” the former Liverpool manager told The Shields Gazette when asked about his meeting with the Newcastle owner.
“Every time I talk about something with him he is trying to help. We have been talking about players and he was already in movement. That is why I’m happy because we have a good relationship to build something important.”
Benitez has committed his future to Newcastle and will be in charge of the Magpies in the Championship next season.
The Spaniard failed to prevent the Magpies from getting relegated from the Premier League, but some of the performances and results in the final weeks of the campaign were encouraging.
It seems that Ashley has faith in Benitez, who will have his work cut out in the Championship. The Championship is a hugely tough, physical and competitive domestic league.
Now that Benitez has decided to stay at St. James’ Park, the former Real Madrid boss should start working on his squad for next season.
There are some very good technical players in the current Newcastle team, but do they have the tenacity and physical ability to cope with the rigours of the Championship?
