Writing on Twitter, former Newcastle United striker Mick Quinn has revealed that he has "lumped on" his old club to win the Championship next season.

The Magpies have sealed perhaps their most significant signing of the summer after manager Rafael Benitez re-committed himself to the club in another three-year deal.

It is massive news for Newcastle fans, who must have had their doubts whether a Champions League-winning boss of Benitez's vintage would make the step down into the Championship with them.

Former players are also delighted with the decision and Quinn, who spent three years at St James's Park, claims to have staked a significant sum of money on the Spaniard leading them to promotion via winning the league next term.

The North-East giants are clear favourites to win the division, with Norwich City and Aston Villa - both relegated with Newcastle from the Premier League - at 9/1 apiece to lift the trophy next May.

But given the unpredictability of the Championship, many gamblers may have stayed away. The truth is that Newcastle aren't a 'sure thing' to win promotion, let alone finish top of the pile in a gruelling 46-match season.
