Celtic appointment of Brendan Rodgers has created great excitement around Parkhead.
Celtic did not made it into the Champions League group stage under Rodgers’ predecessor Ronny Deila in either of the Norwegian’s two seasons in charge.
Celtic’s poor form in Europe was one of the major reasons behind Deila’s departure from Parkhead.
Rodgers is expected to improve the Bhoys’ fortunes in European competition, and Hartson believes that the former Liverpool boss can do just that.
"Celtic need work and they need to get back in Europe properly,” the former Celtic striker said.
"Rodgers has got experience and that little bit of European experience with Swansea and Liverpool.
"That's where Celtic want to be and Rodgers will need to bring those big European nights back, he has to get through those qualifiers.
"I do think its a really good appointment, I think Celtic have got themselves a top, top manager.”
Rodgers was confirmed as Celtic boss last week, and his arrival has sparked great excitement at Parkhead.
The Northern Irishman is a high profile arrival at Parkhead, and his appointment is a signal of Celtic’s ambition for the future.
Rodgers is likely to be backed by more funds than Deila, as he looks to strengthen the Bhoys’ squad.
Celtic have already been linked with the likes of Danny Graham and Robert Snodgrass since Rodgers took charge.
