According to Calciomercato, Stoke City have made a fresh £11 million bid for Axel Witsel.
The report claims that the Belgium international is likely to leave Zenit Saint Petersburg this summer and Stoke City are among the frontrunners keen on bringing him in.
Boss Mark Hughes has the likes of ex-Champions League winners Xherdan Shaqiri, Bojan Krkic and Ibrahim Affelay at his services while the club broke their transfer record for Giannelli Imbula last summer.
It’s unlikely Witsel will fetch such a huge fee this summer, yet that’s no slant on the evident qualities which he possesses and there is no doubt he would be another superb coup for the Midlands club.
The report claims that Stoke’s latest £11 million bid isn’t their first attempt for the player, and it may not be the last either as club chief Tony Scholes says money is available to strengthen the team this summer.
Witsel has just one year remaining on his contract at Zenit, and a number of his international colleagues already ply their trade in England and will no doubt remind him of the Premier League’s quality.
Stoke will be keen to further strengthen their position in the top-flight, and a real boost in quality this summer could pave the way to a potential challenge on the European spots next season.
