According to The Telegraph, Arsenal are plotting a big summer deal for Napoli centre back Kalidou Koulibaly.
The report claims that Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has made the Napoli defender plus a striker his summer transfer priorities following the completion of Granit Xhaka’s switch from Borussia Monchengladbach.
The Gunners are intent on bolstering their squad this summer following their failed Premier League title bid last season and the scrutiny they came under from their own supporters.
While Xhaka has been brought in to bolster the midfield area, arguably Arsenal’s biggest area for concern is at centre-back with Per Mertesacker ageing and Gabriel Paulista still error-strewn.
Koulibaly, 24, stands at 6ft 2inch and is a born leader, capable of dominating opponents in the air while possessing the physical strengths to cover ground quickly and put himself about.
The Senegal international is widely regarded as one of the best defenders in Italy, yet his future at Napoli is uncertain with a number of top European clubs interested as stated in the report.
The Telegraph report that any potential deal for the defender would cost Arsenal around £20 million - a figure which is well within their budget amid increased financial gains via new TV deals.
Koulibaly made 33 Serie A appearances this past season, averaging 2.5 tackles, 2.5 interceptions and 3.6 effective clearances per league encounter as he impressed throughout the campaign.
