Karius left with Mainz's blessing, but it was also a transfer they would have preferred not to sanction.

Sporting director Rouven Schroder told BILD that it was the goalkeeper's desire to move to Anfield and they simply could not stand in his way.

He said: "Anyone who deliver consistently good performances in the Bundesliga over a long period, to an almost complete package of being goalkeeper paired with good footballing skills brings attention from the big clubs in the Premier League.

"We tried everything in the last few days once again in order to keep our number 1, but unfortunately we had to comply with his request."

Karius has brief experience of playing in England in Manchester City's youth team, before leaving to go and play regular first team football with Hamburg.

He has played more than 100 Bundesliga games and at 22 is an outstanding talent capable of winning senior international caps in future for his country, having previously represented at under-21 level.
