Speculation has mounted (The Standard) that newly-promoted Middlesbrough are plotting an £8 million bid for West Ham United winger Michail Antonio.

The Hammers signed him from Nottingham Forest last September and the 26-year-old went on to enjoy an excellent first season in East London, netting eight goals in setting up three in 28 Premier League outings this past season.

He has also established himself as something of a fan favourite at the club, by virtue of his work ethic and rather bizarre goal celebrations which has endeared him to the Irons' faithful.

Consequently, supporters did not react kindly to the rumours that he could potentially join up with Aitor Karanka's side, whereas many others refused to believe the speculation.

To be fair, it does seem very unlikely that a prominent figure in a team who challenged for Europe last term would throw that away for a side who, like so many newly-promoted outfits, might struggle to stay in the top flight.

Summer transfer windows are, after all, labelled 'silly season' for a reason, and this may be the latest product of that. Could he join Middlesbrough? Only time will tell.
