Tottenham Hotspur are reported to have struck an agreement to sign Jonathan Calleri, according to the player's father.

According to Yahoo! Brasil, Calleri's dad claims Spurs have a verbal agreement with the striker's club Sao Paolo to sign him when this season's Copa Libertadores is over.

The competition runs into July, with Calleri playing a key role in the South American tournament so far, scoring eight goals in 10 games.

The 22-year-old's dad is also his agent, but Calleri's ownership situation is not straightforward.

He is owned by Uruguayan team Deportivo Maldonado who signed him from Boca Juniors, before loaning him to Sao Paolo.

Deportivo Maldonado were able to do this via a third party investment group, which is not outlawed in South America.

This would have to change if Calleri were to sign for Spurs, with the Premier League bringing in rules against third party ownership in 2014.

Calleri is a player of real potential, who can play both up front and on the right wing. Spurs coach Mauricio Pochettino hails from Argentina and is likely well aware of Calleri's talents.

Tottenham need another forward to add to Harry Kane, but given the time Erik Lamela has taken to adjust, it may be wise not to put all their eggs into Calleri's basket.

Here is a look at how Tottenham fans reacted to the reports that they are closing in on the striker...
