Sunderland are on the look out for value-for-money transfers in the summer transfer window.
According to a report in the Shields Gazette, Sunderland have continued to scout Lorient right-back Lamine Gassama and Bordeaux midfielder Clement Chantome, ahead of potential summer moves for the pair.
Sunderland are looking to invest in the upcoming transfer window, as Sam Allardyce plans to bolster his squad.
The 61-year-old should have money to spend in the summer, but he has already expressed a desire not to overspend.
Allardyce fears that the masses of money in the Premier League will cause foreign clubs to demand over inflated fees for their players.
However, there are no such concerns with Gassama or Chantome as both are out of contract and available on a free transfer.
Gassama made 31 appearances for Lorient this season, while Chantome played 32 times for Bordeaux.
Sunderland had success buying from Ligue 1 in the January transfer window, with both Lamine Kone and Wahbi Khazri being huge successes after arriving from French clubs.
