Burnley have sent a thank you message to midfielder Joey Barton on Twitter as he prepares to complete his move to Rangers this week.

Barton, 33, signed for Burnley on a free transfer last summer having left Queens Park Rangers, and despite being one of the most controversial figures in English football, he proved all his doubters wrong with a superb season for the Clarets.

The former England midfielder made 38 league appearances for Burnley, hitting three goals and two assists as Sean Dyche's men won promotion back to the Premier League.

Now though, Barton is out of contract with his one-year deal at Turf Moor over, and despite having the chance to play in the Premier League again, it appears that he's ready to move on.

The Daily Mail report that Barton will sign a two-year contract with Rangers this week, having taken over a week to think about the offer from Mark Warburton's side.

Barton's move is expected to be confirmed any day now, and whilst he will add grit and steel to Warburton's midfield at Ibrox, it's a huge blow for Burnley.

The former Manchester City, Newcastle United and Queens Park Rangers star would have brought valuable experience to the Burnley side upon their return to the Premier League, but manager Dyche must now look to try and replace his inspirational midfielder.
